Buying Prescription Glasses Online in Egypt: A Practical Checklist
Buying glasses online works well for most prescriptions and badly for a few. Knowing which case you are in is the whole decision.
What you need before you start
- A prescription less than two years old, with SPH, CYL and AXIS for each eye, and ADD if you need reading correction.
- Your pupillary distance (PD). Ask the clinic that tested you, or measure it at home.
- The measurements from a frame you already own and like — the three numbers printed inside the temple arm, such as 52□18 140.
The five mistakes that cause returns
- Ordering without a PD and letting the seller assume an average. On anything above a mild prescription this causes eye strain within hours.
- Judging frame size from the photo. A frame photographed on a small face looks larger than it is; always check the millimetres.
- Copying a contact lens prescription onto a glasses order. The two are not interchangeable and the powers genuinely differ.
- Buying progressives online without a fitting height measured on that specific frame. This is the single most common expensive mistake.
- Swapping the right and left eye rows. Check OD/OS against R/L before you submit.
What a serious seller offers
- A clear price breakdown separating frame, lens index and each coating — not one lump sum.
- A stated remake or refund policy if the prescription was fitted incorrectly.
- A physical address and a phone number that a person answers. This matters more in eyewear than in most categories, because adjustment is a physical service.
- Free adjustment after delivery. No frame arrives perfectly fitted; the fit is set on your face, not in the factory.
- Cash on delivery, which remains how a large share of Egyptian e-commerce is actually paid for.
How long it should take
Single vision lenses in a standard index are typically ready in two to four working days. High-index, progressive or specially tinted lenses take longer — usually five to ten days — because they are surfaced to order rather than pulled from stock. Any seller quoting same-day delivery on a high-index progressive is either holding an implausible inventory or cutting a corner.
When to buy in store instead
- Your first pair of progressives.
- A prescription with prism correction.
- A prescription stronger than about ±6.00, where lens thickness and centring need to be discussed together with the frame choice.
- Children's glasses, always.
- Any case where your last two pairs both felt wrong — that is usually a fitting issue a screen cannot diagnose.
Try before it ships
The honest weakness of buying eyewear online is that you cannot see the frame on your face. Camera try-on closes most of that gap — it maps the frame to your actual face proportions rather than a model's — and a 3D view lets you check thickness and finish from angles a product photo never shows.
Try any frame on with your camera, then add your prescription at checkout.

Is it safe to buy prescription glasses online in Egypt?
For a straightforward single-vision prescription, yes — provided you supply an up-to-date prescription and an accurate pupillary distance, and buy from a seller with a physical presence you can return to for adjustment. Progressives, prism corrections and children's glasses are better fitted in person.
How long does it take to make prescription glasses?
Two to four working days for standard single vision lenses. Five to ten days for high-index, progressive or specially tinted lenses, because those are surfaced to your specific prescription rather than taken from stock.
What if the glasses do not fit when they arrive?
Minor fit issues are normal and are solved by adjustment, not return — the nose pads and temple arms are meant to be shaped to your face. Bring them to any branch. If the lenses themselves were made to the wrong specification, that is a remake, and any reputable seller will state that policy in writing before you order.
Can I use my old glasses to work out my prescription?
An optician can read the power out of your existing lenses with a lensmeter in about a minute, and most will do it free. It tells you what your old glasses are, though — not what your eyes need now. If the pair is more than two years old, treat the reading as a reference point and book a test.
Do you deliver outside Cairo?
Yes, we deliver nationwide across Egypt, with cash on delivery available. Delivery time outside Greater Cairo typically adds one to two days to the lens production time.
