Blue Light Glasses: What They Do, and What They Don't
Blue light filters are sold as a cure for tired eyes. The research says the tiredness is real but the cause is different — and the fix is mostly free.
If your eyes ache after a day at a screen, that experience is real and has a name: digital eye strain. What is less clear is whether blue light is the thing causing it.
What the evidence says
Systematic reviews of blue-light-filtering lenses have consistently failed to find a meaningful benefit for eye strain compared with ordinary clear lenses. The amount of blue light a screen emits is a small fraction of what you receive from stepping outside on any Cairo afternoon. Nor is there good evidence that screen blue light damages the retina at real-world exposure levels.
There is one area with better support: blue light in the evening does suppress melatonin and can delay sleep. That is a circadian effect, not an eye-health one — and a filter that only works while the glasses are on your face is a weaker tool than simply putting the phone down.
So what actually causes screen eye strain?
- Reduced blinking. You blink roughly a third to a half as often when concentrating on a screen, so the tear film dries out. That is the burning, gritty feeling.
- Sustained near focus. Holding focus at 50 cm for hours keeps the focusing muscle contracted, and it aches like any other muscle held still.
- An uncorrected or outdated prescription. Even a small uncorrected astigmatism becomes exhausting over an eight-hour day.
- Glare and reflections — from a window behind you, from overhead lighting, and from the front surface of your own lenses.
- Poor ergonomics: a screen above eye level opens the eyelids wider and accelerates tear evaporation.
What actually helps
- The 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something about 6 metres away for 20 seconds. This is the single most effective intervention and it costs nothing.
- An anti-reflective coating. This has real, measurable evidence behind it for screen comfort — unlike the blue filter it is often sold beside.
- Get your prescription checked. A large share of "screen fatigue" turns out to be an outdated correction.
- Position the top of the screen at or slightly below eye level, about an arm's length away.
- Preservative-free artificial tears if your eyes feel dry — particularly in air-conditioned offices.
- For sleep: use your device's night mode and stop screens an hour before bed. That addresses the one blue light effect that is well supported.
If screens have started to tire you, an up-to-date prescription is the first thing to rule out.

Do blue light glasses really work?
